Located in the cool Akuapem Hills of Ghana’s Eastern Region, Aburi Botanical Gardens is one of the country’s most peaceful and historic nature attractions. Just a short drive from Accra, the gardens offer a refreshing escape from the city, with shaded walking paths, towering trees, open lawns, tropical plants, and beautiful scenery ideal for quiet reflection, photography, and group visits.

Established in March 1890, the gardens occupy approximately 64.8 hectares, or about 160 acres. Before becoming a botanical garden, the site was used as a sanatorium built in 1875 for Gold Coast government officials seeking the cooler mountain climate of Aburi. The gardens were later developed under the leadership of Governor William Brandford-Griffith and Dr. John Farrell Easmon, a Sierra Leonean medical doctor.

Aburi Botanical Gardens also played an important role in Ghana’s agricultural history. It supported early scientific farming efforts and helped distribute cocoa seedlings and agricultural knowledge that contributed to cocoa production in southern Ghana.

Today, the gardens remain a favorite stop for visitors exploring the Eastern Region. Guests can enjoy the calm atmosphere, learn about Ghana’s botanical and colonial-era history, and pair the visit with nearby attractions such as Aburi town, craft markets, Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, Akropong, or other Eastern Region nature sites.
