The Bono Region, one of Ghana’s historic cultural centers, blends heritage, traditional life, and striking natural scenery. From sacred groves and waterfalls to market towns, farming communities, and river landscapes, Bono offers travelers a meaningful look at Ghana’s inland beauty and cultural depth.
Bui National Park is one of Ghana’s major protected areas and an important wildlife destination along the Black Volta River. Established in 1971, the park covers approximately 1,821 square kilometers and is recognized as Ghana’s third-largest national park. Its landscape includes woodland savanna, gallery forests, riverine habitats, caves, hills, and scenic views connected to the Black Volta.
The park is best known for its hippopotamus population, one of the most important remaining hippo populations in Ghana. The Black Volta River and surrounding waterways provide critical habitat for these animals, making Bui a significant site for wildlife conservation and nature-based tourism.
Beyond hippos, Bui National Park supports a variety of wildlife, including elephants, waterbucks, bushbucks, baboons, patas monkeys, green monkeys, antelopes, crocodiles, and many bird species. Birdlife is especially rich, with more than 250 species recorded, including the rare white-necked rockfowl.
The park is also connected to one of Ghana’s major development projects, the Bui Dam. The dam created a large reservoir along the Black Volta and changed parts of the park’s landscape and wildlife habitat. This makes Bui National Park an important place to understand both conservation and the challenges of balancing national development with environmental protection.
For visitors, Bui National Park offers opportunities for guided wildlife viewing, birdwatching, river scenery, photography, and learning about Ghana’s natural ecosystems. It is best experienced with advance planning, proper transportation, and a knowledgeable guide.
Travel Tip: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, especially in a large protected area. Visitors should confirm current access, road conditions, guide availability, and safety requirements before traveling. Early morning and late afternoon are often better times for wildlife viewing.
Best For: Eco-tourism travelers, wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, conservation groups, students, researchers, photographers, and travelers interested in Ghana’s river landscapes.
Recommended Visit Time: Half-day to full-day, depending on access, travel time, and planned activities.
Pair With: Bui Dam area, Black Volta River views, Banda, Wenchi, Techiman, Sunyani, Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, Kintampo Waterfalls, or a wider Bono/Savannah Region nature itinerary.
Visitor Note: Bui National Park is a protected wildlife area, not a casual roadside attraction. Visitors should follow guide instructions, respect wildlife, avoid littering, and understand that conservation areas require patience and responsible behavior.
