The Ashanti Region stands as the proud heart of Ghana’s cultural identity — home to the legendary Asante Kingdom, the Golden Stool, and centuries of royal tradition. In Kumasi, the historic capital of the Asante Kingdom, visitors experience a powerful blend of royal heritage, vibrant markets, traditional crafts, education, innovation, and modern Ghanaian life.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, commonly known as KNUST, is one of Ghana’s leading public universities and one of Kumasi’s most important institutions. Located in Kumasi, the university is known for education, research, science, technology, engineering, health sciences, architecture, business, arts, and innovation.

KNUST began in 1951 as the Kumasi College of Technology and officially opened in January 1952. In 1961, it became a full university and was named in honor of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister and first President, whose national development vision placed strong emphasis on education, science, industry, and African progress.

The roots of higher education in Kumasi also connect to the earlier vision of Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I, who desired a university in Kumasi as part of a broader effort to modernize the Asante Kingdom. Although that early vision was not realized during his reign, KNUST later became a major symbol of educational advancement in Ashanti and Ghana.

Today, KNUST is recognized for producing graduates who contribute to Ghana, Africa, and the world in engineering, medicine, technology, entrepreneurship, research, public service, and creative industries. Its campus is also known for its large green spaces, academic buildings, student life, cultural diversity, and role in Kumasi’s growth as an educational and innovation center.

For visitors, KNUST offers a different perspective on the Ashanti Region. Beyond palaces, markets, and traditional crafts, the university shows how Kumasi continues to shape Ghana’s future through knowledge, leadership, innovation, and youth development.

Travel Tip: KNUST is an active university campus, so visitors should be respectful of students, faculty, security rules, and restricted areas. A visit is best arranged with a host, guide, alumni contact, or official campus connection when possible.

Best For: Educational groups, students, alumni, researchers, innovation travelers, youth leadership groups, architecture interests, Diaspora families exploring study opportunities, and visitors interested in modern Ghanaian education.

Recommended Visit Time: 1–2 hours for a general campus visit; longer for formal meetings, academic tours, or alumni activities.

Pair With: Manhyia Palace Museum, Kejetia Market, Kumasi Cultural Centre, Okomfo Anokye Sword Site, Bonwire Kente Village, Ntonso Adinkra Village, or a full Kumasi city tour.

Visitor Note: KNUST is not a traditional tourist attraction. It is a working academic institution. Visitors should avoid disrupting classes or student activities, follow campus guidance, and treat the university as a place of learning and national importance.
