Traveling to Ghana is more accessible than many first-time visitors expect. Most international travelers arrive through Accra International Airport (ACC) in Accra, Ghana’s capital city and primary international gateway.

Whether you are coming from the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, another African country, or the Middle East, careful planning will make your arrival smoother and your first days in Ghana more comfortable.

Flying into Accra

Accra International Airport is located in Accra and serves as Ghana’s main international airport. From there, travelers can connect to hotels, group tours, domestic flights, cultural sites, business meetings, family visits, and destinations across the country.

Several international airlines serve Accra from major global hubs. Depending on your departure city, you may find direct or connecting flights through cities such as New York, Washington, D.C., London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, Addis Ababa, Casablanca, Lisbon, and other regional gateways.

For many travelers from the United States, direct service to Accra may be available from select cities. Other travelers may connect through Europe, the Middle East, or another African country.

Flight schedules, routes, and prices change often, so it is always best to confirm current availability before making travel plans.

Entry Requirements

Before traveling to Ghana, confirm all entry requirements well in advance. Most U.S. travelers need a valid passport and a Ghana visa before arrival, unless they qualify under a specific exemption.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates and should have blank visa pages available. Travelers should also confirm current health, vaccination, and customs requirements before departure.

Entry requirements can change, so do not rely only on old blog posts, social media comments, or word of mouth. Check with the Embassy of Ghana, the Ghana Consulate, your airline, or your travel advisor before traveling.

Booking Your Flight

When booking flights to Ghana, price should not be the only factor. A cheaper ticket may include long layovers, multiple connections, overnight airport waits, difficult arrival times, or limited baggage flexibility.

Before booking, compare:

  • Total travel time
  • Number of connections
  • Layover length
  • Arrival time in Accra
  • Baggage allowance
  • Seat selection fees
  • Change and cancellation rules
  • Visa requirements for any transit country
  • Airline reliability and customer service
  • Group travel needs, if applicable

For first-time travelers, older adults, families, and group tours, the easiest route is not always the cheapest route, but it may be worth the difference.

Arriving in Ghana

When you arrive at Accra International Airport, you will go through immigration, baggage claim, and customs. Have your passport, visa, travel documents, hotel details, and return flight information easily accessible.

After clearing customs, you will enter the arrivals area. Accra’s airport can be busy, especially during holiday periods, major festivals, December travel season, and large events. If you are traveling with a group, stay together and follow the instructions provided by your tour coordinator or driver.

Do not hand your bags to anyone unless they are part of your confirmed pickup arrangement or official airport support. If someone assists you with luggage, a tip may be expected.

Airport Transfers

For a smoother arrival, arrange airport pickup before you land. This is especially important if it is your first time in Ghana, you are arriving late at night, traveling with elders, carrying multiple bags, or joining a group tour.

Beyond the Return Travel & Tours recommends confirmed transportation rather than trying to figure things out after a long international flight. Your first hour in Ghana should feel organized, safe, and welcoming.

Domestic Travel Within Ghana

If your itinerary includes Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, or other regions, domestic flights may help reduce long road travel. Road trips are still a valuable part of seeing Ghana, but travel times can be longer than expected because of traffic, road conditions, weather, and stops along the way.

For heritage tours, cultural experiences, business travel, or multi-region itineraries, a good transportation plan matters.

BTR Travel Tip

Book early, confirm your documents, and do not wait until the last minute to apply for your visa. Ghana is welcoming, but international travel still requires preparation.

The journey to Ghana begins before you board the plane. When your flight, visa, airport transfer, and first-night accommodations are handled properly, you can arrive with less stress and more room to receive the experience.
